Challenge

The United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) is the food assistance branch of the United Nations and the world's largest humanitarian organization working to address hunger and promote food security.  The organization sought an established logistics company to manage their Extended Delivery Points (EDPs) in Palabek, Kiriandongo, Nakivale, Kyaka II, Kyangwali, Rwamwanja, and Oruchinga – including inbound and outbound logistics and human resources.

UNWFP faced escalating costs due to frequent labor disputes and pest control challenges that resulted in a loss of food as well as inventory management challenges that affected stock reconciliations.

Solution

UHD leveraged its existing warehouse infrastructure and its 20 years of experience in managing all types of Warehousing Facilities to deploy a 9-stage quality assurance and management process in alignment with their ISO 9001:2015 accreditation to streamline operations and efficiency for the UNWFP.

The UHD team was responsible for managing:

  • Products: Product Selection, Visual and Physical Inspection, Storage Management, Product Handling and Distribution, Issues Tracking and Management, Product Recall Management, and Pharmacovigilance.

  • Quality: Staff Training and Awareness, and Quality Management through integration with the National Quality Management System.

  • Pest Control: Integration of WHO pest control procedures for tropical climate food including fumigation and total quality management on inbound and outbound activities supported by training cleaners on proper fumigation processes.

  • Security: contracted strategic professional and seasoned professional security firm to handle EDP security.

Results

UNWFP costs have reduced by 18% and their monthly costs stabilized.

Inclusion of casual laborers from the community and refugees has been achieved with improved remuneration due to efficient processes leading to no labor action.

Zero security-related incidents confirmed with no security incidents reported.

Reporting is maintained at 100% with an established scheduled status sharing protocol.
